My Thoughts:
To Romania we go! Jessica and Lucius are finally together and....(wait for it)...MARRIED! Which means, Jessica and Lucius must take on the role of .....how should I put it? Leaders? Kings? Rulers? Well, you know what I'm saying. but it's not that easy for Jessica. She has to try to agust to he new vampire self, while leaving behind her American lifestyle. And then, to top it off, A vampire is murdered, and everyone has their fingers pointed at Lucius. Crazy right?? Jessica is forced to take over, while lucian's trial date inches closer and closer.
I loved whatching Jessica bloom into a princess. She went from a scared little girl, to a confident young women. and the mistery was really cool. While most people probablly figured out the murderer half way throught the book, Fantaskey puts alot of twists and turns that make the book much more entertaining.
Unlike the first book, this book isn't just told from Jessica's point of view. It's told between four alternate point of view's: Jessica, Lucius, Mindy (Jessica's bestfriend), and Raniero (Lucians cousin). At first, some might think it would get confusing, but it actually wasn't. And it was so funny. Raniero and Mindy added to the comedy, which was perfect, considering the fact that Lucians speech always provides each and everyone of use with so many laughs. So triple the laughs in this book, guys!
One of the best things about this series is the give and take realationship between Lucius and Jess. Neither one dominates their relationship. Ms Fantaskey introduces a new romance in this novel: Mindy and Raniero (who has an interesting history). It goes from feisty to heart felt to laugh out loud funny, to tender. And just the thing now that Lucius and Jess are wed.
The only issue I had with this book is that it lacked a lot of the constant romance, like with the first book. Obviously there’s a reason for that. With Lucius...well...being in jail and all. but I missed him a lot during this book. I mean, don't get me wrong. Lucise and Jess love each other, and they always will! He’s so strong, and noble and fierce and so incredibly in love with his wife. Just the way he speaks of her in his letters to Raniero, that noble prose of his.....*swoon* There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for Jess and all hell would break loose if anyone ever hurt a hair on her head. But i couldn't help but wish that he and jessica where more together in this book.
If you loved Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, then this is a must read! I hope Ms Fantaskey chooses to write more books in the Jessica series. Maybe kids? Little baby Lucians and Jessicas? Is that to much to ask?
Quotes:
“I also need you to "spread the word," quietly, that if any harm should come to Antanasia during my imprisonment, I will not only tear down these walls stone by stone, but -- once freed -- shatter the rule of law and destroy, with great satisfaction, anyone who arouses in me even the slightest suspicion. Indeed, if so much as one hair on my wife's head is disturbed while I cannot protect her, this kingdom will see retribution that will go down in the history books -- to be read by the very few who remain standing.
- Lucius”
― Beth Fantaskey, Jessica Rules the Dark Side
“Someday Jessica" he says quietly,"you will stand before me in this very room, as we prepare for some function which
we both dread, for we have been to so many in our years together, and you will smile and reach up to adjust my crooked tie, as you always do. And one of our children—perhaps our first son—will tug at your dress, demanding our attention. Then I will kiss you, and reach down to lift our child, thinking, How did I come to be so happy?”
― Beth Fantaskey, Jessica Rules the Dark Side
“Jessica: If we only have daughters?
Lucius: If we have only daughters, I will be the happiest vampire alive. For I have come to learn--from you--that a princess can be as powerful as a prince.”
